Torifan’s review: I've never been a huge baseball fan, but when I saw this film years ago, I loved it. And it has stood the test of time. This was back when Madonna was still on the charts and before the current Kabbalah fad, back when Rosie O' Donnell was a budding comedian, and back when sentimental movies like this really went over well with audiences. Based on the true league of female baseball players which came about during World War II, this film centers around two sisters who begin on the same team but through certain sibling rivalries, end up playing against each other.

My dad is a huge baseball nut, and he loved this movie too. We all agreed, however, that the ending is about the most aggravating of all time. We follow The Rockford Peaches throughout this movie, rooting for all of the players for various reasons. Mae (Madonna) is the sassy tart of the bunch, Doris (Rosie O'Donnell) is the tomboyish wiseacre, Dottie (Gina Davis) is the wise one with the most talent, and Kit (Lori Petty, in better days) is Dottie's bratty little sister. And we can't forget their manager Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), who cracks us up as a sarcastic drunk in the beginning but who makes us tear up as a proud coach by the end. So we come to love these people (Thank You, Penny Marshall) and what happens? Maybe I shouldn't blow the ending here, as you may not have seen this movie a hundred times like I have. Let's just say?..there was a lot of buildup and a bit of a letdown there at the end. But the most comical thing of all in this very funny and at the same time touching film was the coda Marshall gives us where we see the women in their old age.

They all end up at Cooperstown at the Hall of Fame, which included lots of actual female ballplayers. The tribute there was nice. But the old woman who portrayed Kit gave us a face so scary it belonged in a horror movie. Bean and I agreed: Pitiful Adult Actor (PAA) there! I guess we can't all be great actors. But in this movie, silly endings aside, the acting as well as the tribute to the league is not only respectful, it's memorable.
